ORIGINAL DARTS RADAR GUIDE · UPDATED 2026-10-24

How to choose dart weight without buying blindly

There is no single weight that is best for every player. Treat a weight change as an experiment: compare similar darts, keep other variables steady and resist judging a set from one impressive visit.

Start with the set you already use

Write down its stated weight, barrel shape, grip position, shaft and flight. Check whether the retailer means barrel weight or the assembled dart; descriptions can differ. This guide discusses steel-tip choices. Check board and venue restrictions separately before buying soft-tip equipment.

Borrow before buying

If possible, try two nearby weights in the same barrel design through a club, shop or another player. Different grip, balance, length and flight shape can change the feel as well as the weight. A comparison between completely different sets cannot isolate the effect of weight.

Use the same comparison routine

Warm up with each set. Then throw thirty darts at the same chosen segment and thirty at a fixed double, recording hits separately. Reverse the order in your next session so the second set does not always benefit from the warm-up. Repeat on at least three days and include comfort and release confidence in your notes.

Decide what would count as a useful change

Before looking at results, decide whether you mainly want a more comfortable release, fewer obvious slips or more consistent grouping. A small score difference in a short trial is weak evidence. If neither set is clearly preferable, keeping your current darts avoids paying for an uncertain benefit.

Check the whole purchase

Confirm what is included, the stated weight basis, grip dimensions, point type and replacement parts. Compare the total delivered price and retailer terms at the time of purchase. Do not assume a player-branded set suits your throw or that a more expensive barrel produces better scores.
